New stamps on Year of Horse

 

Serbian Post has issued a set of  two stamps  to commemorate the Lunar Chinese Horoscope. 2014 is the Year of the Horse.

An additional astrological factor that isn’t as universally recognized is the element put together with each year: either metal, wood, water, fire or earth. These distinguish the year even further, with 2014 known as the year of the wooden horse, or the green wooden horse, as wood is associated with greenery and nature.

The Chinese animal signs are a significant part of the new year, with this year ushering in the horse, an animal signifying unexpected adventure and surprising romance, according to astrologer Susan Levitt. These characteristics are the most pertinent to those born in the year of the horse: 1918, 1930, 1942, 1954, 1966, 1978, 1990, 2002, 2014.

Goodbye, year of the water snake, and hello, year of the wooden horse.

 

Stamps on Owls from Lithuania

On April 5th  a set of two stamps were issued on OWLS in Lithuania. The two stamps  feature Barn Owl and the Eurasian Pygmy Owl. A FDC and two Maxicards were also issued together with a booklet in limited edition of 5 000 pieces(booklet).

New  stamps on Orchids

Australia Post issued  a set of four stamps featuring  Orchids. Known for their exquisite flowers, orchids are the largest family of flowering plants in the world, with more than 30,000 species identified. Distributed in most countries, they are prolific in tropical regions. Australia has around 1,300 orchid species, with 95 per cent of these not found anywhere else in the world.

Orchids are either terrestrial, having an underground root system, or epiphytic, where they grow on host trees for support. A subset of epiphytic orchids is the lithophytic orchid, which grows on exposed rocks.

Golden Rock Orchid Dockrillia striolata ssp. Chrysantha
Also called the Streaked Rock Orchid, this lithophytic species is found in south-eastern Australia. The subspecies chrysantha is endemic to Tasmania, and has fragrant, creamy yellow flowers. Tasmania has about 210 species of native orchids.

Bee Orchid Caladenia discoidea
This terrestrial orchid, also called the Dancing Spider Orchid, is endemic to Western Australia. The name means “club-bearing” and refers to the broad, flat, deeply fringed labellum

Orange Blossom Orchid Sarcochilus falcatus
The scent and shape of this orchid’s flowers are similar to orange blossoms. It is distributed throughout eastern Australia up to Cape York Peninsula.

Shirt Orchid Thelymitra campanulata
Also called the Bell Sun Orchid, this orchid is endemic to the south-west of Western Australia. Two distinctive features have contributed to its common names: the small flowers often have a bell-shaped appearance, and the fine striping on petals and sepals.

New Stamp from Latvia

 

To welcome the approaching spring, Latvijas Pasts has released a new stamp depicting a tulip as part of the popular and eye-catching Flowers series. The new stamp Tulip has been designed by artist Lilija Dinere.

Tulips are plants belonging to the lily family. They got their name because of their shape: the word tulip is derived from the Persian word toliban meaning turban, a type of headdress. Tulip is a genus of about 100 species, of which only one species – the wild tulip – grows in the wild in Latvia.

Fourth District Level Philatelic Exhibition “Udaipex 2014” was organized in Udaipur, Rajasthan. There were twelve participants in senior group and five in junior group. PMG Rajasthan Southern Region Mr. Jitendra Gupta was chief guest and jury, noted philatelist Mr Virendra Sharma was Jury in this exhibition and Major S.N. Dave, SSP Udaipur was president and organizer of the show.

Greetings on Mahashivaratri

 

Today is Maha Shivratri (the 'Great Night of Shiva'). It  is a Hindu festival celebrated every year in reverence of Lord Shiva all over the country. Greetings to all the readers on this festive occasion.

Mahashivaratri also marks the night when Lord Shiv performed the 'Tandava', the cosmic dance.According to another legend of Samudra manthan, Shiv saved the world from the disastrous effects of a poison that emerged as a by product of churning of sea (Samudra manthan), by consuming whole of it. Shiv could arrest the poison in his throat by his Yogic powers and it could not go down his body. His neck turned blue due to effect of poison on his throat and thenceforth he is also called as Neela Kantha or The blue Throated.

Unusual Flora – Plants of the Botanical Garden of Meise stamps from Belgium

Bpost issued a sheet of 5 stamps from the series “Unusual flora” featuring some plants of the Botanical Garden of Meise.

The Botanical Garden of Meise is one of the largest botanical gardens in the world with an extensive collection of living plants in addition to a herbarium of over 3 million specimens. The current garden was established in 1958 after it moved from the center of Brussels. Researchers at the garden conduct research particularly on Belgian and African plants.

The Botanic Garden contains about 18,000 plant species – about 6% of all known plant species of the world. Half are in greenhouses, the other half, including cultivated and indigenous plants, are outdoors. The gardens are grouped around the castle and lake of the Bouchout domain.

The mission statement of the Botanic garden of Meise specifies the increasing and spreading “the knowledge of plants” and contributions to “the conservation of biodiversity.”

The plants featured on stamps are: Titan arum (Amorphophallus), Pebble plant (Lithops), Monkey cups (Nepenthes), Ant-house plant (Myrmecodia) and Jade wine (Strongylodon).

Classic Locomotives

Date of Issue : 20 February 2014

Royal mail issued a miniature sheet featuring classic locomotives.

The delightful, bilingual Miniature Sheet features all four Classic Locomotives of Wales stamps, together with a dramatic photograph of the BR Class 5101 2-6-2T No. 4126 as it crosses the Crumlin Viaduct with a passenger train in 1963 in its border.

LMS No. 7720 First Class

Built in 1895 at the Crewe Works for the London and North Western Railway, the LMS “coal tank” is pictured leaving Britannia Bridge, pulling a Bangor-to-Holyhead local train in around 1930.

Hunslet No. 589 Blanche 78p

This stamp shows Blanche at the Pen Cob Halt on the Ffestiniog Railway in 1964. The locomotive was originally made for the Penrhyn Slate Quarry by the Leeds based Hunslet Engine Company. The narrow gauge Ffestiniog railway took slate to the harbour at Porthmadog.

W&LLR No. 822 88p

The Earl Photographed waiting for a car to be moved from the line on Welshpool’s Union Street in 1953, The Earl was constructed for the Welshpool and Llanfair Light Railway in 1902.

BR 5600 No. 5652 £1.28

The BR 5600 freight engine was designed by the Great Western Railway company to transport goods across its massive rail network. The stamp shows the loco pulling coal at Cwmbargoed in 1959.

British Flora

Date of Issue : 19 February 2014

Another set of stamps issued by Royal Mail on 19th February 2014 feature some varieties of British Flora. This is under the series Pictorial Post & Go Stamps by Royal Mail. The six Spring Blooms Post & Go Stamps are printed in a vertical strip and overprinted with First Class values. They are brought on a carrier complete with fascinating facts about each of these beautiful but in some cases declining species.

Primrose

Walk into a clearing in the woods and you could well be pleasantly surprised by a colony of primroses, for a sheltered spot between the trees is one of their favored habitats, as well as parks and churchyards. According to folklore, these lemon-yellow flowers with their heart-shaped petals – which flower from February to May – will grow red if watered with bullock’s blood or planted upside down on Good Friday.

Snowdrop

Haunting woods, meadows, parks and churchyards, these delicate lantern-shaped blooms encapsulate, for many, the beginning of spring. From the Amaryllidaceae family, they are in flower in February and March. A symbol of hope and purity, the snowdrop is traditionally dedicated to the Virgin Mary.

Lesser Celandine

Catch these bright yellow star-like flowers on a sunny spring day and you will be in for a treat, for they open wide in the sunshine. Spot them in woods and hedgerows and on road verges and the banks of streams from March to May. “Local” names for the celandine include “goldy knob”, “filding cup” and “golden guinea”.

Common Dog Violet

From April to June, these rich purple flowers bloom across Britain’s woods, downlands and grass heaths. From the Violaceae family, dog violets are widespread throughout the British Isles.

Wild Daffodil

The iconic bright yellow flower that famously inspired William Wordsworth blooms from February to April, and is seen in coppice and open woodland. Its Latin name, Narcissus pseudonarcissus, is said to have come from the Greek mythological figure Narcissus, who fell in love with his own reflection in a pool of water. The daffodil’s trumpet shaped center is seen as the head of Narcissus bending down while he admires his face in the water. Daffodils are traditionally meant to first flower on St David’s Day – 1 March.

Blackthorn

Forming hedgerows and scrub, the white flowers of this very spiny shrub are in bloom from March to May. Come the autumn, the blackthorn produces sloes – those plump, purple berries that are used, of course, to make sloe gin.

New Love stamp from Ireland

 

On the eve of the St. Valentine’s Day, An Post issued a Love and Marriage stamp as an extension of the popular Wedding stamp series. This year, the stamp is based on a photograph of a red rose – the symbol of love – by award-winning, Galwaybased photographer Kelvin Gillmor.

Roses have long been synonymous with love and marriage and are ancient symbols of love and beauty. The rose was sacred to a number of goddesses including the Greek goddesses Isis and Aphrodite the goddess of love, known as Venus by the Romans.

Basant Ke Rang (Colours of Spring)

State Flower Show, Raj Bhawan, Dehradun, Uttarakhand

Started in 2003, the State Flower Show is held at Raj Bhawan, Dehradun, every year. Releasing of special cover and cancellation is customary in the flower show as it is part of the official agenda, courtesy to the then Governor H.E. Sh. Sudarshan Agarwal, who himself is a keen philatelist. Special covers has been released in 2003, 2004, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013.

This year the flower show will be held on 22-23 February 2014. Special cover on Kedarpatri ( Skimmia laureola) will be released on 22-02-14 by the Governor H.E. Dr. Aziz Qureshi. Kedarpatri has medicinal values and is also favourite food of musk deer. It is found at 2400-3600 mt. height in northern India. It is a strongly aromatic evergreen shrub, creeping or erect to 150 cm., with simple rather thick leathery, oblanceolate to oblong-elliptic, shortly pointed leaves, and very compact terminal clusters of yellow flowers, flowering from April to June.

Jainism Philately Group, Pune Chapter organised a special function on Sunday 16th February 2014 at Pune. JPG National Chairman Sudhir Jain of Satna was the chief Guest. 3rd Anniversary of Jainism Philately Group and 1st Anniversary of JPG Pune Chapter was celebrated in this function.

Sudhir Jain delivered talk on pictorial cancellations on Jainism and Bazaar Cards and displayed his collection on both these themes.

A Bangalorean philatelist holds the rare distinction of owning cancelled postal covers dating back to 1864 and spanning 60 years of pre-Independence India.

H M Ananda Murthy has been collecting cancelled covers whose combined worth is estimated at more than `35 lakh today.

Since his childhood, he has collected stamps of every colour and size from almost every country. Hailing from Chikkanayakana-halli in southern Karnataka and now settled in Bangalore, 54-year-old Murthy continues his hobby.

“I have collected a wide range of stamps since 1974. In 1996, I got the silver medal at Canada Philatelic Exhibition in Toronto,” he told City Express.

He also started collecting Traveling Post Office (TPO) and Railway Mail Service (RMS) cancellation covers dating back to 1864.

His unique collection includes many types of cancellations. Some names given to them are: Bombay circle, Howrah circle, up train, down train, unpaid sorting, registered, first, second, third, fourth delivery with  semi-circle, triangle, diamond, hexagon and oval design. Each of these has a story to tell and generates interest among collectors.

“My collection spans 61 years from 1864 to 1925. I have collected more than 350 to 400 covers worth more than `35 lakh. I have in my collection the rare mirror image cancellation (when the dateline is in reverse), and error cancellations (to correct wrongly mentioned date, month or year),” he explained.

The jury of the Philatelic Congress of India gave him additional marks for his unusually detailed study of every cancelled cover.

In spite of leading a very busy life as a mechanical designer, Murthy makes time for his passion. He also paints temples, and makes models in clay and thermocol. Wax sculpture, illustration and calligraphy are his other interests.

His thematic collection also includes rare flora and fauna, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Mahatma Gandhi, locomotives and more.

“I approach old people and sometimes buy or exchange covers during exhibitions. My hobby has made me more self-reliant and helped me make friends across generations and boundaries,” he said.

Murthy has participated in several exhibitions and received appreciation letters and accolades. “I have also been invited by the postal department to guide and train school children and conduct workshops,” he said.

The huge collection of these rare covers is neither available with the Railways nor the Postal department. “I feel proud and elated to say that it is out of my own efforts that I have come to this position,” he said.

So what is the future? “My dream is to do research further, gain more knowledge and to get a doctorate,” he added.

Humming Bird

The new Hummingbirds 34-cent Stamp postcard stamp from USPS celebrates the beauty and grace of the hummingbird.

The stamp art is a tinted, highly stylized, digital depiction of a hummingbird hovering near a plant.
Hummingbirds, known for their agility, brilliant colors, and long bills, are among the smallest birds in the world, ranging in size from about two to eight inches long. Some weigh less than a penny. Special wing anatomy enables hummingbirds to fly forward, backward, and upside down, as well as to hover in one spot. The “humming” sound they produce is made by their rapid wing movements — the wings of some species beat up to 80 times per second !

Red Gerbera on stamp

Israel Post issued a definitive stamp featuring Red Gerbera. The stamp was issued as part of the Gerberas definitive stamp series.

The Gerbera, or Transvaal Daisy, is an ornamental plant belonging to the sunflower family (Asteraceae). It was named in honor of German botanist Traugott Gerber and originates from the Transvaal region of South Africa.

Some 30 species of Gerbera grow in the wild and they are prevalent in South America, Africa and tropical Asia. The Gerbera is also known as the African Daisy.

The Gerbera has a large head with striking two-lipped ray florets in various colors. The flower heads can be as small as 2 cm in diameter (mini) or up to 12 cm (Gerbera “Golden Serena”). The Gerbera has a long stem and no leaves.

The Gerbera is extremely popular and is widely used as a decorative garden plant or as cut flowers, which last for a relatively long period of time. In recent years new Gerbera species have been cultivated which are designed to grow in flowerpots.

The stamp tab also features 3 gerbera flowers of different colors.

Israel’s National Heritage Landmarks

In 2010 the Israeli government initiated the Empowerment of National Heritage Infrastructure Project, whose goal is to rehabilitate and empower this infrastructure by investing in the preservation, restoration, development, study, publicity, advertising and marketing of historical assets and cultural treasures in order to strengthen Israel’s identity, cultural wealth and unifying strength. The Heritage Project includes hundreds of cultural assets, five of which are featured on the stamps in this series.

City of David, Jerusalem

The City of David, the first capital of the united Jewish nation, was captured from the Jebusites by King David 3,000 years ago. Located just below Mount Moriah, the City of David was the center of Ancient Jerusalem and served as the setting in which many of the events described in the Bible occurred.

The Heritage Project will present a nighttime display for the general public that will relate the incredible story of the City of David.

The stamp bears a bulla featuring the seal of Gemaryahu ben Shaphan (who is mentioned in the Book of Jeremiah) against the background of an aerial photo of the City of David.

The stamp tab features the Shiloach Inscription which describes the architectural feat of the digging of Hezekiah’s Tunnel inside of which the inscription was discovered.

Ein Keshatot, Golan

In the late 19th century, the remains of a Jewish village dating back to the time of the Mishnah and the Talmud were discovered in the southern Golan. A 5th century synagogue was uncovered in the center of the village, one of the most beautiful ever unearthed in Eretz Israel.

The site, known today as Ein Keshatot, was destroyed in the 8^th century by an earthquake. As part of the Heritage Project, the synagogue is being restored and the overall site is being developed.

The stamp features the restored synagogue and the dais for the Holy Ark.

The stamp tab depicts the menorah engraved on the capital of one of the columns in the synagogue.

Synagogue, Peki’in

In the early 20th century, Yitzhak Ben-Zvi came to the Galilean village of Peki’in, where he met members of the Musta’arabi community, Jews who according to tradition never left Eretz Israel and continued to work the land. The Jews of Peki’in epitomized the preservation of the connection to the land of Eretz Israel. The synagogue located at the center of the village was renovated in the 19th century and two ancient stone tablets were incorporated into its walls. A menorah is engraved on one of the tablets, and a Holy Ark on the other. The Heritage Project is focused on documenting the history of the Peki’in community and on preserving the ancient synagogue.

The stamp features the Peki’in synagogue as well as the engraved menorah.

The stamp tab depicts a relief of the Holy Ark.

Detention Camp, Atlit

The restrictions imposed by British Mandate authorities on the entry of Jews into Eretz Israel forced Yishuv leaders and various immigration movements to act illegally and bring the Jewish immigrants in on dilapidated ships and under harsh conditions. The British did everything they could to capture the immigrant ships and transfer their passengers to detention camps which were constructed first in Atlit and later in Cyprus. The Society for Preservation of Israel Heritage Sites, which maintains the camp, purchased and renovated a ship similar to those that served to bring the Jewish immigrants and built an exhibit inside, reflecting the immigrants’ living conditions. The site is being developed within the framework of the Heritage Project, including the renovation of the main buildings and the design of exhibits inside them.

The stamp features a ship similar to those used to bring immigrants against the background of barracks at the Atlit detention camp.

The stamp tab shows passengers disembarking from the “Umot Me’uchadot” (united nations) immigrant ship onto the shore in Nahariya.

Independence Hall, Tel-Aviv

The “two-thousand-year-old hope to be a free people in our land” was realized on May 14, 1948 with the declaration of the establishment of the State of Israel. The declaration ceremony was conducted in the home of Meir Dizengoff, one of the first homes built in Ahuzat Bayit, Tel-Aviv’s first neighborhood. The building was later turned into an art museum. David Ben Gurion read the Declaration of Independence, which was signed at the bottom by members of the Provisional State Council. As part of the Heritage Project, the declaration hall was renovated and an Independence Museum is to be established there.

The unit consists of four stamps, which depicts a young woman symbolizing summer. They show the French marigold (Tagetes patula), common hollyhock (Alcea rosea), wild strawberry (Fragaria vescа), sour cherry (Cerasus vulgaris). This unit won the 6th place in WIPA among 70 countries-members of exhibition in 2013.

" Generous Ukraine – Autumn "

New SEPAC 2014 stamp from Greenland…

Here is new SZEPAC 2014 stamp from Greenland. The newly issued Sepac-stamp from POST Greenland depicts a photo of Rhodiola taken by photographer John Rasmussen. The joint Sepac-theme in 2014 is “Flowers”. In Greenland Rhodiola grows in Southern and Middle Greenland up to the area around Disko Bay on the Western coast and up to the Daneborg area on the Eastern coast.

Rhodiola is primarily used in Greenland as both a spice and in salads. The leaves are used as salad and spinach, the stem is eaten as asparagus and the root is eaten raw or boiled. The dried roots smell of roses and are said to keep away moths and other harmful insects.

A stamp exhibition of the collection of Allahabad philatelist, Mr Ambrish Kumar  started today at Allahabad Museum. The exhibition was inaugurated by Senior Advocate and Former President of Kayashtha Pathshala Trust, Shri T.P. Singh. Shri Rajesh Purohit, Director of the Museum welcomed the guest of  honour and vote of thanks was given by Dr Prabhakar Pandey. Mr Ambrish Kumar spoke about the importance and value of the  stamp collection. On this occasion Smt. Asha Rani, Smt. Mukta Saxena, all the Officers and the Staff Members of the museum, distinguished guests  and many visitors were present.

 

 

Mr Ambrish recently donated his lifetime collection to Allahabad Museum .  The collection  of Indian stamps from 1947 to 2013 and  special covers issued on  Kumbh Mela and other special occasions of  Allahabad were displayed in about 150 sheets.  The collection features cultural heritage of India, Indian Freedom Movement, prominent personalities, nature wildlife,Cinema and  science & technology through stamps and Covers.The exhibition will be continued till 5th February 2014.  

 

 

New Special Cover

KOLAMPEX-2014

A special cover was released on the inaugural function of KOLLMPEX-2014 on 22 January 2014 by Smt. Sumathi Ravichandran PMG (Business Operations). The cover was accepted by Dr.Sivaramankrishna Pillai,Jt.Secretary, Quilon Public Library & Research Centre.

The Quilon Public Library and Research Centre has been the horizon for the prolific lore of the myriad generations that have excelled from this part of Kerala. Quilon Public Library was established in the year 1973. The Quilon Public Library and Research Centre had played a vital role in the cultural development of the people of Kollam. In recognition of its unique contribution towards nurturing the literary and cultural life of Kollam, the postal department issued a special cover in its honour.

Winter flora from Isle of Man…

APEX 2014 -  Philatelic Exhibition at Thiruvananthapuram

SHARJAH 2013

Federal National Council (FNC) Speaker Mohammed Ahmed Al Murr on Thursday opened Sharjah 2013 Stamp Exhibition, organised by Emirates Philatelic Association as part of the celebrations of the 42nd UAE National day. 

The five-day event, now in its fourth year, brought together more than 50 leading stamp exhibitors, including some 30 dealers who are  displaying some of their most valuable collections.

The exhibition encompasses a wide-reaching range of philately themes spanning two centuries, displaying some of the world’s most extraordinary and elusive stamps among the 128 exhibits. It chronicles milestones in the UAE’s four-decade history. Topics range from 19th century Egyptian postal stationery to the earliest days of postal aviation. “Philately is a pursuit enjoyed all around the world, bringing collectors together to exchange not only stamps but also ideas. It offers a unique way to look at our history,” said president of the Emirates Philatelic Association Abdulla Khouri.

On May second , 2014, a new pictorial cancellation will be issued in 20535 Hamburg.The cancellation is featuring a  Salmon (Salmon salar) for the "Day of fish" during the philatelic exhibition NORDPOSTA 2014 at Hamburg.
