German post in cooperation with the German Federal Ministry of Finance introduced a new charity stamp from the series “For the Environmental Protection”. Five colored dots forming a plus sign next to the motto “doing good – help with stamps” can be found on all the charity stamps and supplement products. The additional cost of the philatelic products is dedicated to the charity purposes.

Water is Life – it is the motif of this year’s charity stamp For the Environmental Protection. Without water there is no life, no growth and no harvest. It drives turbines and carries the largest ships. From water we produce energy and our waterways are among the lifelines of industry and business. But this natural resource is not only scarce and precious, it is also highly vulnerable . Pollution and contamination of drinking water are among the most pressing health risks.

UNESCO estimates water difficult of access or even unavailable for up to one billion people. Although the blue planet is covered about two-thirds with water – the most however is salty seawater. Drinkable liquid from precipitation, rivers and freshwater lakes makes only 0.6 percent of the total amount of water on Earth. This precious commodity is also uneven distributed geographically and socially. In some regions, people consume and pollute much water, in others they suffer from poor water quality and lack of water.

The lack of access to clean water is the main problem in many countries of the Third World. Almost 80 percent of all diseases in developing countries, such as cholera and severe diarrhea, are due to contaminated drinking water. Between 2 and 3.5 million people die annually on the consequences of poor water supply, according to estimates.

New Stamps on World Heritage Sites in Germany

-- Pradeep Kuma Mallik

On 2nd January 2014, three stamps were issued by German Postal authorities, Deutsche Post, related to World Heritage sites of Germany.

Scholass Stolzenfels am Rhein (Stolzenfels Castle on the river Rhine): The castle was constructed in 1259. It was used to protect the toll station at the Rhine, when the ships were the main transport for goods, had to stop and pay toll. Over the years it was extended several times. The castle was occupied by French and Swedish troops in the Thirty Years' War and finally, in 1689, destroyed by the French during the Nine Years' War. For 150 years the ruins decayed, until in 1815 they were given as a present to Frederick William IV of Prussia by the city of Koblenz.

image

Following the romantic traditions, the prince started to completely rebuild the castle after 1826 as a summer residence. Supported by famous neoclassic architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel, the castle was completely remodeled in the then fashionable neo-Gothic style, aiming to create a romantic place representing the idea of medieval knighthood - the architects even created a tournament site.

On the steep slope to the river Rhine, a neo-Gothic castle chapel was built. The design of the gardens - at the northern tip was the charming pergola garden with views of the valley - was also associated with the natural surroundings. The road from the valley to the castle was designed like a park with a stone bridge, a waterfall and a hermitage.

This castle palace found its place in the World Heritage List in 2002, is a part of World Heritage – Upper Middle Rhine Valley.

1250 years of Lorsch Abbey: The Abbey of Lorsch is a former Imperial Abbey of the Carolingian Empire. Even in its ruined state, its remains are among the most important pre-Romanesque–Carolingian style buildings in Germany. In 1991 the ruined abbey was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

image

The stamp shows a painting created in 1854 by the Darmstadt court painter August Lucas (1803-1863) with the Torhalle (Gatehouse) in the foreground, the romantic excessive fragment of the monastery church in the background and a look at the Hessian mountain road. The 9th century Torhalle is a unique survival of Carolingian era. This combines elements of the Roman triumphal arch with the vernacular Teutonic heritage – baseless triangles of the blind arcade, polychromatic masonry.

Ancient Beech Forests of Germany: In 2011, UNESCO granted extension to the World Heritage namely - "Beech forests of the Carpathians" by including five forests in Germany. The new World Heritage Site called "Beech Forests of the Carpathians and the Ancient Beech Forests of Germany" and consists of lowland and upland beech forests in Germany and mountain beech forests in Ukraine and the Slovak Republic.

image

The beech spread in Europe since the last Ice Age, the enormous competitive ability of beech and the variety of types of beech forests are a globally unique phenomenon.

In the German part are selected forest areas of the national parks Hainich in Thuringia, cellar-Edersee in Hesse, Jasmund and Müritz in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania as well as the forest area Grumsin in the Biosphere Reserve Schorfheide-Chorin Brandenburg. They represent the most valuable remains of large areas of natural beech stands in Germany. Each field in this case has peculiarities and characteristics that make it unique and irreplaceable.

Winter stamp from Germany

image

Date of Issue : 2 November 2013

German Post issued a stamp creating winter mood. Meteorological winter begins in our latitudes on 1 December, while the calendrical winter follows on 21 December. The calendrical beginning of winter denotes the day on which the sun on the northern hemisphere reaches its lowest altitude above the horizon.

This day lasts about seven hours and ten minutes at the shortest.

Against this early encroaching darkness the radiation of many small lights in front yards and in homes on Christmas trees gladden people. Especially at Christmas time, the lights play a very special role. The twinkle little light shimmering everywhere throws back the snow and the cold.

The design of the “winter mood” stamp depicts the magic of this warm atmospheric glow.

Here are new stamps from Germany, released on 2nd November 2013. The stamps  commemorate great physicist Heinrich Hertz and Professor Rachel Hirsch. The stamps are best suitable for Science and Medical themes.

125 years of electric power radiation - Heinrich Hertz

Heinrich Hertz (born February 22, 1857, died January 1, 1894) is one of the world's greatest physicists and was the most prominent researchers in the former Technical University of Karlsruhe, where until 1889 he taught as a professor in 1885.Previously, he was a lecturer in 1883 for Theoretical Physics at the University of Kiel and then from 1889 professor of physics at the University of Bonn.

The main results of the work are that he named after his electromagnetic waves , discovered that we know today as radio and microwaves, and has demonstrated in an experiment in Karlsruhe. He confirmed the report drawn up by the English physicist JC Maxwell in the form of the so-called Maxwell's equations of the theory of propagation of electromagnetic fields. Heinrich Hertz also showed experimentally that electromagnetic waves behave like light waves. In the treatise "On rays of electric force," he summed up his work together.

Hermann von Helmholtz introduced the report of Heinrich Hertz at the Academy meeting of the Royal Prussian Academy of Sciences in Berlin on 13 December 1888 with great success before.

Posta Faroe Islands issued a set of two stamps within the series “The Christmas Gospel 1″ dedicated to the coming Christmas 2013. The pictures featured on stamps are as follows..

In the first picture, it appears that there is only room for the Message of Joy in a small barn among livestock. In the space above, the star continues to shine, also through the small window of the shed, and announces the new and divine reality. The rod and ladder stand on each side of the barn and symbolize the hope for a new way onward and up.

image

In the next picture, Joseph holds the rod in his hand, and stands with his arm around Mary’s shoulder, ready to lead his family through life – in harmony with his wife and his creator – for still the star shines from the high and leads the way. Mary and Joseph are surprised that the Almighty has settled among humans.

This is the admirable message of Christmas: that God’s giving and sacrificial love can be accommodated in the heart of every single human being.
