In the month of  November, the French National Post Office released two new UNESCO stamps.One stamp (shown above)  calls attention to the endangered red-crowned crane (Grusjaponensis), and the need to protect this species. In Japan, the crane, known as the “tancho,” is a powerful national symbol, representing longevity and immortality.

image

The second stamp features the Ancient City of Sigiriya (Sri Lanka), a UNESCO World Heritage site, where one can wind through ancient galleries and staircases, and out through the mouth of a gigantic lion. The “Lion Mountain” is a unique witness to the civilization of Ceylon during the years of the reign of Kassapa I. Its frescoes inaugurated a pictorial style which endured over many centuries. Poems inscribed on the rock, known as “Sigiri graffiti,” are among the most ancient texts in the Sinhalese language. They attest to the considerable influence that Sigiriya exerted on both literature and thought.

Christmas stamps from Guernsey

image image

Music has long been a feature of the Christmas season and its celebrations. Whilst the earliest chants, litanies, and hymns were Latin works intended for use during the church liturgy, rather than popular songs, over time the words and music has evolved.

image image

Today’s musical Christmas celebrations comprise a variety of genres from traditional carols, emotive melodic arrangements, to fun “sing-a-long” favourites.

image image image

To celebrate the 2013 festive season Guernsey Post has chosen to focus on the entertaining song “When Santa got stuck up the chimney.” The charming images on the stamps, created by talented artist Nick Watton, imaginatively bring the lyrics to life.  Not much is known about the song’s history, originally a folk song the popular version we’re familiar with today has been performed by many artists over the years including Jimmy Grafton.

Stamp Descriptions:

35p – Santa gliding past the window;
40p- Santa lands on the roof;
53p – Santa is stuck in the chimney;
55p – Children pulling Santa out;
63p – Santa sneezing;
71p – Santa leaves presents;
79p – Santa continues on his way.

Seoul Conference on Cyberspace 2013  17 –18 October 2013 image

As the Internet’s importance in our daily lives continues to grow rapidly, the need for international cooperation on rules and regulations designed for creating a safe cyberspace has been greatly enhanced. In order to create a forum where governments, international bodies, corporations and many other stakeholders can discuss, in one place, all cyber-related issues, the UK launched the Conference on Cyberspace in 2011.

The Conference on Cyberspace is an international conference that comprehensively discusses those diverse cyber-related issues such as the economic and social benefits of cyberspace, cyber crimes, cyber security, international security and the build-up of related capabilities, among others. Established with the first conference in London, UK, it was followed by the 2012 conference in Budapest, Hungary. The 2013 conference is held in Seoul, Korea for two days from October 17 to 18. The 2013 Seoul Conference has attracted around 1,000 participants from 80 countries and will include ministers and vice ministers, government representatives, those working for international bodies, as well as representatives of domestic and international ICT (information and communications technology) corporations, academia and research centers.

Under the theme of “Global Prosperity through an Open and Secure Cyberspace,” the Seoul Conference is a critical forum that seeks out ways to effectively address the negative aspects of cyberspace such as cyber-attacks, leakage of personal information, as well as ways for cyberspace to make a continuing contribution to a nation’s economic and social development.

Anticipating a successful hosting of the Seoul Conference on Cyberspace, a commemorative stamp has been issued by Korea Post, where cyberspace’s convenient functions are expressed with colorful, rainbow colors and the protection of cyberspace from its adverse functions was embodied in a lock design

From our Readers……

Urdu Philatelic Poem

Here is a combination of philately and Urdu poetry, a philatelic Ghazal sent by our distinguished reader Deepak Dube from Korba (Chhattisgarh). The ghazal from Mr Dube is under the title 'Vaah Daak', seeks to capture  the passion , purpose and purport of Philately . The poetic merit of the piece is that it is a proper Urdu ghazal , set in a traditional Urdu  meter. Hindi and Urdu Readers can read and understand the poem “ Vaah Daak ”….

Mr Deepak Dube writes…

Ghazals, conventionally, do not have a title as every couplet (sher) of it is supposed to be on an independent thought. But, if a poetic piece is in the form of a ghazal and yet has a single subject or thought running continuously through it , it becomes a "musalsal" ('continuous') ghazal , and , as such , qualifies to a title ; just as the present ghazal does. It would  not be exaggerated to claim that 'Vaah Daak' is the first proper metrical Urdu composition on the subject of Philately.
