Monaco - Russia Joint Issue

 

Date of  Issue : 5 December 2013

The joint issue between the Principality of Monaco and the Russian Federation focuses on automobile manufacturing. The stamp of Monaco depicts the “Sunbeam Alpine” which was driven by Grace Kelly in the 1955 movie To Catch a Thief. This automobile is part of the Private Collection of Antiques Cars of H.S.H. the Prince of Monaco. It is displayed at the Monaco Top Cars Collection museum.

Russian Issue

The Russian stamp features the “ZIL-111V” limousine which was used to transport Nikita Khrushchev for his official trips.It has also been used to ferry Yuri Gagarin from the airport to the Red Square following his historic flight as the first man in space in 1961.

The XXII Olympic Winter Games 2014, Sochi : Olympic Sports Venues

The new stamp issued by Russian Post features the Olympic sports venues of the XXII Olympic Winter Games and XI Paralympic Winter Games 2014 in Sochi.

The Fisht Olympic Stadium is located in the Olympic Park so that the spectators have a magnificent view on both mountain peaks in the north and the sea in the south. The stadium capacity is 40,000 spectators. The opening and closing ceremonies of the Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games will take place at the stadium. After the Olympics, the Fisht Olympic Stadium will be used as a venue for Russian national football team matches and as a training center. It will also be hosting mass entertainment events and shows.

The Bolshoy (“big”) Ice Dome is part of the ice hockey complex of the Olympic Park venues in Sochi. The Palace capacity is 12,000 spectators. In the course of the Games, the Ice Dome will be hosting competitions in ice hockey, and it will be used as a training rink.

The Shayba (“puck”) Arena is part of the ice hockey complex of venues in the Olympic Park in Sochi. The Arena capacity is 7,000 spectators. The venue will be hosting the Olympic ice hockey competitions and Paralympic ice sledge hockey competitions.

The Iceberg Skating Centre capacity is 12,000 spectators. The Palace will be hosting the Olympic competitions in figure skating and short-track skating.

The “RusSki Gorki” Jumping Center is located in the Esto-Sadok village on the northern slope of the Aibga Ridge. The facility location at the junction of two ridges has been selected by the international experts in order to make ski-jumping facilities harmonious with the surrounding landscape and to protect the athletes from side winds. The complex capacity is 7,500 spectators. Within the framework of the Games, the Center will be used for competitions in ski jumping and nordic combined. After the Winter Olympic Games, the RusSki Gorki Complex will become a national training center.

The “Laura” Cross-Country Ski & Biathlon Center is located on the crest and slopes of the Psekhako Ridge, within 6.5–10 km north-east of Krasnaya Polyana. The Center includes two separate stadiums, each with their own start and finish zones, two separate track systems for skiing and biathlon, a shooting range and warm-up zones. The Cross-Country Ski and Biathlon stadiums’ capacity is 9,600 spectators each.

Olympic Champions on new Russian stamps…..

The new issue by Russian Post is dedicated to the world-famous Soviet Olympic champions. Their names form an integral part of the world history, the input they made into the national sport development and strengthening of the international relations was truly enormous. With each victory and record they enhanced the prestige of Russia.

The postage stamps depict Ye. Grishin, L. Pakhomova, V. Melanin, A. Ragulin and
A. Firsov. There are pictures of the athletes at sports events on the illustrated margins.

Yevgeniy R. Grishin (1931–2005) was a Soviet speedskater, Merited Master of Sport of the USSR, multiple champion and record-breaker of the USSR, all-around champion of Europe and the world, 1956 and 1960 Winter Olympic champion in the 500 meter and 1500 meter events. His best results were 39.6  of the 500 m and 2:08.2 of the 1500 m.

Lyudmila A. Pakhomova (1946–1986) was a Soviet ice dancer, Merited Master of Sport of the USSR, ballet mistress, multiple champion of the USSR, Europe and the world in figure skating. In 1970 together with Alexander G. Gorshkov they became the first Soviet figure skaters to win European and world championships. It was to a large extent thanks to their successful performance in European championships that ice dancing deputed as an official Olympic sport in 1976.

Vladimir M. Melanin (1933–1994) was a Soviet biathlete and a Merited Master of Sport of the USSR. He was the first Soviet biathlete to win an Olympic gold medal for the USSR in the 20 km individual in the 1964 Olympics in Innsbruck. Vladimir Melanin was known as the first officially recognized “King of Biathlon”.

Alexander P. Ragulin (1941–2004) was an ice hockey defenseman, Merited Master of Sport of the USSR, three-time Olympic champion and a ten-time world champion. He played for the USSR ice hockey teams “Khimik” and “CSKA” (Central Sports Club of the Army, Moscow). He had 427 games and scored 63 goals in the USSR championships.

As a member of the national team he played 102 games and scored 14 goals in the world and European championships, and the Olympics. He was the best defenseman in the 1966 World Championship and a key player in the legendary 1972 Canada – USSR Series.

Anatoly V. Firsov (1941–2000) was a Soviet ice hockey defenseman, Merited Master of Sport of the USSR, three-time Olympic and eight-time world champion. He was a player in 474 games and scored 344 goals in the national championships; he scored 66 goals in 67 games in the world and European championships and the Olympics. On four occasions Anatoly Firsov was awarded the scoring title in the world and European championships.

Winter stamp from Germany

Date of Issue : 2 November 2013

German Post issued a stamp creating winter mood. Meteorological winter begins in our latitudes on 1 December, while the calendrical winter follows on 21 December. The calendrical beginning of winter denotes the day on which the sun on the northern hemisphere reaches its lowest altitude above the horizon.

This day lasts about seven hours and ten minutes at the shortest.

Against this early encroaching darkness the radiation of many small lights in front yards and in homes on Christmas trees gladden people. Especially at Christmas time, the lights play a very special role. The twinkle little light shimmering everywhere throws back the snow and the cold.

The design of the “winter mood” stamp depicts the magic of this warm atmospheric glow.

Stamp on Olympic torch relay

Russian Post issued a souvenir sheet with one stamp dedicated to the Olympic torch relay for the Winter Olympics 2014 in Sochi.

The history of the Olympic torch relay began in 1936, and in 1952 the relay preceded the Olympic Winter Games for the first time.

The stamp of the souvenir sheet  depicts the emblem of the Olympic Torch Relay of the XXII Olympic Winter Games 2014 in Sochi. The fields of the S/S illustrate the map of the Russian Federation; the Torch Relay, the images of the Moscow Kremlin and the Naval Station in the city of Sochi.

Nature Protection : Slovak Minerals

 

The Slovak post Pofis issued a set of two stamps within the series “Nature Protection” depicting Slovak minerals – precious opal from Dubnik and scepter quartz from Sobov.

Opal is an amorphous substance, hydrated silicon dioxide (SiO2.nH2O), with a variable amount of water (3-21%). There are several opal varieties nonetheless the precious opal represents one of the most valuable ones thanks to opalescence, a magic light reflection of sparkling colourful pastel colours. Colour changing is caused by a refraction and dispersion of light on fine layers with different content of water, minute admixtures of other minerals or in micro-fissures. The precious opal is the most famous gemstone of Slovakia. It can be found in fillings of fissures in Late Tertiary volcanic rocks – andesites in areas between Cervenica and Dubnik in Slanskevrchy Hills. It was formed by condensation of hot silicate aqueous solutions which as after-effects of volcanic activity penetrated into fissures of neighbouring rock.

Quartz (SiO2) is one of the most common minerals in nature forming hexagonal columnar crystals finished with planes of trapezohedron or dipyramid. Crystal planes are frequently grooved.  The crystals can be found in a form of crystal twinning and other various deformations. However, this mineral usually has massive, granular or microcrystalline shape, and can be also found as amorphous. It can be of various colours, virtually covers the whole colour spectrum. Its streak is white.  Quartz is a transparent even translucent mineral with vitreous shine on a new surface. Plenty of its forms represent semiprecious stones, for instance: clear crystal quartz, rose quartz, violet amethyst, yellow citrine, smoky quartz, black morion, amorphous chalcedon variable in colour, agate and opal.

A so-called sceptre or dovecote quartz is a mineralogical curiosity from the vicinity of Banska Stiavnica. The crystals are joined together along the longest axis in such a way that their final shape reminds a sceptre or a dovecote (the bigger crystal is usually grown on the smaller one or vice-verse).

XIV World Championships in Athletics 2013

Russian post issued a stamp on 10 August  to celebrate the XIV World Championships in Athletics 2013 being held in Russia.

Summer World Championships in Athletics are organized by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF). The competition is held every two years and lasts 9 days. From 10 to 18 August 2013 the World Championship will be held for the first time in Moscow, Russia, on Luzhniki Stadium, whose North and South arenas, sporting settlement and Large sports arena will be involved. The stadium will put up more than 33 thousand supporters. The event is attended by athletes from 201 countries who will compete for 47 sets of medals.

The stamp features competing athletes and the logo of XIV World Championships in Athletics 2013.

Shawls from Russia…

 

 

Hi !

Russian Post issued a  set of 4 stamps in sheetlet form  featuring famous Russian Shawls.  I am sharing here  information about Russian shawls. It just caught my attention as the place, Kullu where I live is famous for shawls all over the world. It is really nice to write here about shawls of Russia …

 

 

Russian post issued a set of stamps dedicated to Arts and Crafts of Russia and depicting shawls produced by Pavlovopasadsky, Orenburg, Karabanovsky and Trekhgorny manufactories.

Pavlovopasadsky products represent a riot of lush garden and wild flowers in the corners of a shawl with garland on the border, as well as oriental ornaments imitating Indian and Persian shawls. This Moscow province was also famous for its production of patterned silk fabrics and scarves.

Orenburg shawl is a knitted shawl made of goat’s wool and base (cotton, silk and other). There are several kinds of Orenburg shawls:

Simple shawl – grey (rarely white) thick warm downy shawl. With the production of these shawls the Orenburg knitting industry was launched. This is the warmest kind of shawl which was used for everyday wear.

Gossamer – laced fabrication from goat’s wool and silk. It was used in ceremonies, festive occasions, as the schemes and techniques of knitting were much more complex than in the case of a simple downy shawl.

Tippet – a thin scarf/cape analogical to gossamer by the technique of fabrication and manner of use.

Shawls of Troetsko-Alexandrovsly manufacture of Baranovy traces its history from 1846.

Multicolored floral patterns played a major role in product’s ornamentation. The red colour, present in each element, united central part and border, background and main pattern. Along with floral patterns the Baranovsky shawls had geometric and Oriental (“cucumber”) motifs.

Among the diverse range of Trekhgorny manufacture scarves and shawls played an important role. Most products had a “classic” ornament: broad border with a lush flower garland, large central part with rhythmically balanced bouquets or branches, creating a feeling of static pattern.

Department of Posts has decided to dispatch Parcels of relief material free of postage charges for providing help to the victims of natural calamity of Uttarakhand State. This facility is made available in various Post Offices where the parcels upto 35 KGs of relief material such as clothes, blankets, woolens, bedsheets, medicines, tarpaulin, plastic sheets, torch, long shelf-life food etc can be booked free of charges.

The Parcels should be marked as “Relief Material for Uttarakhand” and addressed to “The Senior Postmaster, Dehradun GPO, Dehradun-248001 (Uttarakhand)”. 50 Years of Woman’s First Flight to Space

 

Russian post issued a stamp to commemorate 50^th anniversary of woman’s first flight to space.After the first successful flight of Soviet cosmonaut, the Soviet Union decided to send a woman astronaut into space. Initially the simultaneous flight of two women’s crews was planned, but later this plan was abandoned in favour of the selection of one astronaut among five candidates. Valentina Tereshkova was selected astronaut number 1 among Soviet women.

The world’s first woman astronaut went into space flight in June 16, 1963 on the “Vostok-6″ spaceship from the “Baikonur” cosmodrome. Despite the physical discomfort Tereshkova endured 48 orbits around the Earth and spent almost three days in space, where she was keeping a logbook and making photographs of the horizon, which were later used for the detection of aerosol layers in the atmosphere.
