Error Variety on 2012 India - Israel Joint Issue Stamp

image

While going through the recent stamps, I noticed an error in the Diwali stamp of 2012 - India Joint Issue with Israel stamp issue.

I name it as 'Ring of Fire' variety - a small ring in yellow color above the letter 'A' in 'INDIA' .This stamp is from the full sheet, which means, it is not from the sheetlet.

I am not sure whether this is a constant error (i.e. similar stamp can be found in each sheet at the same position of this stamp in row and column). so, stamp collectors can check and see if they find any similar stamp in their collection.

Date of Issue : 2 February 2014

On 2nd February each year  World Wetlands Day is observed. This day marks the date of the adoption of the Convention on Wetlands on 2 February 1971, in the Iranian city of Ramsar on the shores of the Caspian Sea.

Each year since 1997, the Ramsar Secretariat has provided materials so that government agencies, non-governmental organizations, conservation organizations, and groups of citizens can help raise public awareness about the importance and value of wetlands.

image

Each year on 2 February, the Game Bird Habitat Collection is issued by New Zealand Post to celebrate World Wetlands Day. The 2014 issue is the 21st in the series and features the Pūkeko.

image

One of the most recognisable birds in New Zealand, the Pūkeko (Porphyrio melanotus) is also one of New Zealand’s most beloved birds. Pūkeko populations are abundant across the country, though they’re mostly around wetlands and farmlands. The Pūkeko is affectionately known as a swamp hen, pook, or for some hunters, the blue pheasant.

The distinctive Pūkeko is mostly a deep blue colour, sometimes with purple tones, with a black head and upper parts, white feathers under its tail, and a striking red bill with matching red legs. The Pūkeko is seen by New Zealanders as very cheeky and friendly, though it can be aggressive and territorial. Pūkeko are excellent runners and swimmers, and despite the fact that they’re reluctant to take flight, when pushed, they are strong flyers that can cover long distances.

The Pūkeko nesting season usually runs from August to March, though it is not unusual to see baby chicks hatching in late autumn. Pūkeko are cooperative breeders, meaning that multiple male and female birds often share a nest and divide up the responsibilities of incubation of eggs, and the guarding and feeding of chicks.

World Wetlands Day

2 February each year is World Wetlands Day, This is an international date with a different theme and message on a relevant subject set each year by the Ramsar Secretariat.

World Wetlands Day 2014: Wetlands and Agriculture

“ Wetlands and Agriculture: Partners for Growth ”

The them for World Wetlands Day 2014 is Wetlands and agriculture: Partners for growth.

The year 2014 has been designated by the United Nations as the International Year of family farming. In recognition of the important interrelationship between farming and wetlands, the theme for World Wetlands Day 2014 is Wetlands and agriculture: partners for growth.

Wetlands have often been seen as a barrier to agriculture, being drained and reclaimed to make more farming land available.

But the essential role of wetlands in providing valuable ecosystem services such as water purification of farm runoff, recycling nutrients, protecting land from flood damage and recharging groundwater aquifers (as well as offering recreation opportunities and supporting a rich diversity of wildlife) is now being acknowledged.

These days, there are successful agricultural practices that support healthy wetlands and World Wetlands Day is a chance to showcase farming families who are clearly demonstrating that protection of wetlands goes hand in hand with production from the land.

4th January – World Braille Day

Today is world Braille Day. World Braille Day is annually celebrated on January 4, the birthday of Braille inventor, Louis Braille. The day recognizes the contributions of Louis Braille in helping blind and visually impaired people to read and write. This Post is a tribute to Lois Braille, the angel to millions and millions of visually impaired persons in The world !!

Braille - a code used by the visually impaired worldwide

Braille is a code that uses bumps and indentation on a surface to represent alphabets and letters and can be recognized by touch. Louis Braille, a French man who was blinded in an accident at a very young age, invented it. Before Braille invented this form of communication, visually impaired people read and wrote using the Haüy system which embossed Latin letters on thick paper or leather. This was a complicated system that required much training and only allowed people to read, not write. Discouraged by this, Braille at the age of 15 invented the Braille code.

While there are now several different versions of Braille, Louis Braille’s code was arranged in small rectangular blocks called cells with raised dots in a 3 x 2 pattern. Each cell represented an alphabet, number or punctuation.Since Braille is a code, all languages and even certain subjects like mathematics, music and computer programming can be read and written in Braille.

Louis Braille (4 Jan 1809 – 6 Jan 1852 ) Louis Braille is credited with inventing the Braille language which helps blind people to read as well as write.Louis Braille was born in France. At the age of 3, he accidentally became blind. However, he had a great yearning to be able to read and write properly, despite his disability. An attentive kid at school, at the age of 15, he developed a set of symbols by making raised dots on a piece of paper. The dots could be easily felt by hand, thus enabling even the blind to feel them and hence, read and write.

image image

The language developed by Louis Braille is today known as the Braille language. Louis’s work was not only confined to alphabets. He was passionate about music too, and thus, in the latter part of his life, he even developed Braille language for music. While developing the language for music, he made a point to keep it flexible so that it could be adapted to almost any musical instrument around the world.

image image

Although the system was very useful for those with visual impairment, it was only 2 years after Louis’s death in 1854 that the system was adopted by his school. Soon after its adoption, it grew very popular in the rest of France. The penetration of the system in other countries was quite slow.

The World Braille Day is celebrated every year to recognize the efforts of Louis Braille. His simple yet effective invention made it possible for blind people to read and write. The World Braille Day is relatively a little known occasion. However, for individuals working for the blind, it is a day of great significance.

image image  image

Various competitions are organized across cities specifically for the blind. Awareness is also raised about the new technologies coming in the field of Braille language on this day. For example, in the earlier days, a special type of typewriter had to be used in order to write Braille language. Now a days, computers are also equipped to do the job. The World Braille Day is taken as an opportunity by various organizations and philanthropic individuals around the world to help the blind out there.

  image image

The World Braille Day in 2009 marked the 200th birthday anniversary of Louis Braille. It was celebrated around the world, including that in France, where a special exhibition was organized in a museum dedicated to Louis Braille. In India, Belgium as well as Italy, special coins were released with the image of Louis Braille.

The Christmas 2013 stamps by Brazilian Correios celebrate the coming holidays and at the same time commemorate the 50th anniversary of Monica character.

On the first Christmas stamp Shown above, Monica and Cebolinha are dressed as Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus. Cebolinha holds a gift bag with the present he wants to offer Monica – a traditional blue bunny, holding another small gift. The scene radiates harmony, brotherhood and joy – the eternal relationship between characters. The used colors are traditional for Christmas: green, blue, yellow with a predominance of red. The stamp’s edges are partially altered by sinuous curves which makes an effect that the characters look out from within the image.

image

The second Christmas stamp colored in red and white illustrates Monica leaning her elbows on a gift’s ribbon and wishing everyone “Happy Holidays” in a graceful, spontaneous and childish manner. The edges of the stamp have a triangular shape, thus, when the stamp is applied very close to the edge of the envelope, it seems to be gift-wrapped.
