A commemorative stamp on  Intelligence Bureau (IB), India’s internal  Intelligence  agency was also released today by India Post.

image

The Intelligence Bureau (IB) is India's internal intelligence agency and reputedly the world's oldest intelligence agency. It was recast as the Central Intelligence Bureau in 1947 under the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Shrouded in secrecy, the IB is used to garner intelligence from within India and also execute counter-intelligence and counter-terrorism tasks. The Bureau comprises employees from law enforcement agencies, mostly from the Indian Police Service (IPS) and the military.

Understanding of the shadowy workings of the IB is largely speculative. Many a times even their own family members are unaware of their whereabouts. One known task of the IB is to clear licences to amateur radio enthusiasts. The IB also passes on intelligence between other Indian intelligence agencies and the police. The Bureau also grants the necessary security clearances to Indian diplomats and judges before they take the oath. On rare occasions, IB officers interact with the media during a crisis situation. The IB is also rumoured to intercept and open around 6,000 letters daily. It also has an email spying system similar to FBI's Carnivore system. The Bureau is also authorised to conduct wire tapping without a warrant.

Christmas and New Year stamps from  Spain

image

Spanish Correos issued a set of two stamp celebrating Christmas and New Year. The first stamp depicts a traditional nativity scene. Happy New Year! is the message featuring in the second Christmas stamp which is illustrated with the clock from the Puerta del Sol in Madrid and the traditional twelve grapes.

Spanish custom

A custom in Madrid in the late 19th century imposed the intake of twelve grapes at the chimes of the clock in the Puertadel Sol. The practice soon spread throughout Spain and seems to have its origins in a surplus of grapes in the area of Alicante and Murcia.A grape is eaten at each chime with the wish for a prosperous and happy new year.

This Spanish tradition became popular in Latin American countries where in some places fresh grapes are replaced by raisins like in Argentina. The arrival of the New Year is celebrated differently in each country. In Italy for example, it is customary to make a lentil soup and in Greece a cake is baked with a coin inside which promises a year of happiness for the person who finds it.

Spain – Belgium joint stamp issue – 150 Years of the Red Cross

image  image

Date of Issue : 28 October 2013

The postal administrations of Spain and Belgium have come together to jointly issue stamps commemorating the 150th anniversary of the founding of the Red Cross. The two countries illustrate their respective stamps with motives allusive to the organization.

The idea of founding an international society for humanitarian aid arises from the Swiss Henry Dunant (Geneva, 1828-1909) after witnessing the Battle of Solferino in 1859 between the Austrian army against the French and Piedmonts leaving in a single day on both sides, 40,000 soldiers dead or wounded on the battle field. Jean-Henri Dunant was shocked by the terrible aftermath of the battle, the suffering of the wounded soldiers and the near-total lack of medical attendance and basic care. Impressed by the tragedy he conceived the idea of creating a neutral aid organization to provide humanitarian aid regardless of races, nationalities and beliefs.

Back in Geneva his proposal was backed up by another four Swiss citizens subsequently been referred to as the “Committee of the Five,” This committee founded in 1863 the International Committee of the Red Cross, whom, with the support of the Swiss government, held a year later the first diplomatic conference attended by 16 European countries including Spain and the United States.

The Red Cross is a global humanitarian movement headquartered in Geneva (Switzerland). In Muslim countries it is known as the Red Crescent. The fundamental principles governing the Red Cross and Red Crescent are humanity, impartiality, neutrality, independence, voluntary service, unity and universality. The emblems identifying the organization -a Red Cross or Red Crescent on a white background- are recognized by all countries.

The Klong put is the Xe Dang language name of a musical instrument of the wind family, air driving-in branch. 700th Anniversary of Era Querimonia of the Aran Valley stamp from Spain

image

Spanish Post issued a stamp celebrating the 700th anniversary of Era Querimonia of the Aran Valley.

The Aran Valley is located in the central Pyrenees in the province of Lleida. The history of this valley is marked by the defence and claim of a series of historical rights that make up its identity.

In the Middle Ages (1175), the Aranese signed a treaty with the king of Aragon granting them the privilege to make use and be in possession of their own pastures, forests and waters. The king took on the obligation to defend them from possible enemies and in return, the Aranese paid an Aranese Galin (equivalent to about 20 litres of wheat) as tax per household.

In 1313 the dwellers of the valley agreed to swear allegiance to King James II in return for keeping their charters, privileges and freedoms. On August 23 1313, James II King of Aragon, Valencia … and Count of Barcelona, drew up the document known as Era Querimonia in which the Aranese were awarded a series of rights.

Era Querimonia consists of twenty two chapters. The first few refer to the right of the Aranese to their own lands, vineyards, orchards, fishing waters, mills and irrigation. They are entitled to their own woodland and forests with freedom to cut wood for their own use and convenience. They may hunt in the woods, cut grass for winter and allow their animals to graze in these lands. Other chapters refer to: communal rights, the king’s army, offenses and penalties; notaries and judges’ salaries, among others.

Particularly important is the chapter on the right of pre-emption and buyout because of kinship which obliged any man wanting to sell a property to offer it first to his brothers and relatives. Another interesting chapter is the one on the system of economic conjugal rights, referring to the rights and partitions of the consorts. The privileges of the Era Querimonia have remained, albeit partially.

With the advent of democracy and the 1990 Act of the Parliament of Catalonia part of the historical and linguistic rights of the Aran Valley were restored.

The stamp depicts one Galin and the coat of arms of the Aran Valley.

A bridge is a structure built to span physical obstacles such as a body of water, valley, or road, for the purpose of providing passage over the obstacle. There are many different designs that all serve unique purposes and apply to different situations. Designs of bridges vary depending on the function of the bridge, the nature of the terrain where the bridge is constructed, the material used to make it and the funds available to build it.

image

The first bridges were made by nature itself — as simple as a log fallen across a stream or stones in the river. The first bridges made by humans were probably spans of cut wooden logs or planks and eventually stones, using a simple support and cross beam arrangement. Some early Americans used trees or bamboo poles to cross small caverns or wells to get from one place to another. A common form of lashing sticks, logs, and deciduous branches together involved the use of long reeds or other harvested fibers woven together to form a connective rope capable of binding and holding together the materials used in early bridges.

Bridges can be categorized in several different ways. Common categories include the type of structural elements used, by what they carry, whether they are fixed or movable, and by the materials used.

Bridges of Spain

image

The Bridges of Spain 2013 issue by Spanish Correos is made up of two stamps depicting a modern suspension bridge, Puente de Sancho el Mayor (Navarra), and another of Roman origin, the Puente de Puentecillas (Palencia).

The Bridge of Sancho el Mayor, in Navarra, crosses the river Ebro and is part of the A-15 highway. It was built in 1978 by civil engineers Javier Manterola and Leonardo Fernandez Toyano and as a cable-stayed bridge. It has a total length of 204 meters, a width of 29 m and a main light span of 142 m, to which are added two side openings on the left bank of the river. It was built with precast keystones using the “cantilever” technique (the bridge is constructed in outward projections that are added on). This suspension bridge is supported on a single pier located on the axis of the road with 35 pairs of twin cables. At the time it was built it was one of the most innovative bridges in design and materials.

A typical cable-stayed bridge is a continuous girder with one or two towers erected above piers in the middle of the span. From these piers, cables are attached diagonally to the girder to provide additional support. Engineering wise they stand in between counter steel bridges and suspension bridges. This type of bridge began to be built in the late 19th century and its use was widespread after World War II, thanks to the technical development of the construction materials and the structural empowerment via computers.

image

Over the river Carrion in the city of Palencia stands the historic Puente de Puentecillas, the oldest bridge in town. Its original layout dates back to Roman times and it has undergone many changes since the 11th century, the most important of which took place in the 16th century when the current outline of the bridge was set and the remains of the Roman bridge disappeared. It stands in the city center close to the Cathedral and other monuments and has become a popular walking area with plenty of green spaces.

At the entrance of the bridge is the famous Bolo de la Paciencia, where washerwomen leaned their baskets of clothes while chatting. For years it has been a town’s meeting place.

Emilio Aragon “Miliki” on new Spanish stamp

image

Spanish Post issued a stamp to commemorate famous spanish Clown, Miliki.

The popular clown Miliki is one of the most beloved characters by generations of Spanish children, and on this occasion, he is depicted on the Popular Character stamp series by Correos which remembers all those who are part of Spanish historical and cultural heritage.

It was in 1973 when “Los payasos de la tele” (the TV clowns) made their first appearance on television with the welcome greeting: “How are you”. This expression marked the beginning of the show which continued with stories and songs and which entertained children for over a decade. The protagonists of the story were the Aragon brothers: Gaby, Fofa and Miliki, who were joined years later by their sons Fofito and Milikito.

Miliki and his brothers Fofa and Gaby began their artistic way by acting in the circus. In 1939 they joined the Circo Price and in 1945 immigrated to Cuba where they were very successful in television. For over 25 years they lived in America: Puerto Rico, Mexico, Venezuela, United States and Argentina were among the countries where they were cheered by the public.

On their return to Spain, they joined TVE (Spanish National Television) in 1973 with the premiere of “The Grand Circus of TV” which a year later was renamed “The clowns” and which was joined by Fofito and Milikito.

Besides being a comedian, Miliki played the flute and studied music and composition. After the separation of The Clowns he turned to music production and recorded several albums with his daughter Rita. He wrote books, published his memoirs and won several music awards. In 2008 and 2009 he recorded the albums: A misninos de 40 anos and A todosmisninos, in memory of those who for years were faithful to his friendliness and good spirits.

Radio Society of Great Britain Centenary 2013

A commemorative cover is being issued on 5th July to mark the Centenary of the Radio Society of Great Britain, the body that represents Britain’s radio amateurs. The cover being released through Bletchley Stamp Art features the Duke of Edinburgh against a montage of vintage and modern images. The stamp is Royal Mail’s “Station X” with a Bletchley Park Post Office cachet. This bears the early code number for Fenny Stratford post office and the undercover PO Box 111 address for Bletchley Park. The newly restored RSGB ‘hut’ at Bletchley Park provides the link to the cover design and stamp choice. The exhibit offers visitors a fascinating insight into the world of radio.
