Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya(1860-1962)

India Post issued a postage stamp on 15 September 1960 on his 100th Birthday. It was an exception that  a postage  stamp was issued by Deptt. of Posts on a living personality.

In India, Engineer's day is celebrated on September 15. This day is celebrated in the honor of Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya(1861-1962).

On His Birthday.For his contribution to engineering field he was awarded the Indian public's highest honour , the Bharat Ratna, in 1955 along with Mr Bhagwan Das(1869–1958),Independence activist, author and Mr Jawaharlal Nehru(1889–1964),first Prime Minister of India.

A special Cover in memory of 150th Birthday Celebration of Bharat Ratna Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya was released in Chickballapur on 15-09-2010 by Karnataka postal circle, Muddenahalli, chickballapur. 

Mokshagundam Vishveshwariah,  (popularly known as Sir MV; 15 September 1860– 14 April 1962 was a notable Indian engineer, scholar, statesman and the Diwan of Mysore during 1912 to 1918. He was of Andhra Origin his mother tongue was Telugu.  Every year, 15 September is celebrated as Engineer's Day in India in his memory. He is held in high regard as a pre-eminent engineer of India. He was the chief designer of the flood protection system for the city of Hyderabad, now capital city of Andhra Pradesh, as well as the chief engineer responsible for the construction of the Krishna Raja Sagara dam in Mysore. He was born in Muddenahalli in Karnataka state.

Awards and Honours

Visvesvaraya was appointed a Companion of the Order of the Indian Empire (CIE) in 1911. In 1915, while he was the Diwan of Mysore, Visvesvaraya was knighted as a Knight Commander of the Order of the Indian Empire (KCIE) by the British for his myriad contributions to the public good. After India attained independence, he was awarded with the nation's highest honour, the Bharat Ratna, in 1955. He was feted with honorary membership of the international Institution of Civil Engineers (based in London) and a fellowship of the Indian Institute of Science (based in Bangalore). He was awarded several honorary doctoral degrees like D.Sc., LL.D., D.Litt. from eight universities in India. He was president of the 1923 Session of the Indian Science Congress. Sir M.V. was awarded honorary Membership of London Institution of Civil Engineer for an unbroken 50 years. He was the most popular person from Karnataka, in a newspaper survey conducted by Prajavani.

Philatelic Tributes  to Sarat Chandra Chatterjee the great writer of India on his Birth Anniversary

Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay (15 September 1876 – 16 January 1938) was a Bengali novelist and short story writer of early 20th century.Sarat Chandra was very popular as a story-teller - more so than either Bankim or Tagore. His sketeches on the social canvas had a very subtle reformist twist to them. His critique on social norm was only a message and never an agenda. He refrained from value judgment.

He felt that his duty as a writer was to raise awareness about social malice and not to reform the society. The latter was a reformer's work. Nevertheless, he faced uphill battle with conservative sections of the Hindu social leaders (refer Pally Samaj). He was not particularly liked either by the Imperial representatives for his Pather Daabi. It was banned for alleged preaching of sedition from 1927 to 1939 and again in 1940 under Section 124A of the Indian Penal Code and under the Dramatic Performance Act respectively.

His works have been made into some fifty films in many Indian languages, particularly his novel Devdas made into eight versions, from Bengali, Hindi to Telugu, all verson get huge response. Parineeta also been made twice, Majhli Didi (1967) by Hrishikesh Mukherjee and Swami (1977) for which he was awarded Filmfare Award for Best Story. Another famous film Chhoti Bahu (1971) is based on his novel Bindur Chhele.His Novel 'Datta' was adapted into a Bengali film (1976) starring Suchitra Sen and Soumitra Chatterjee in the lead roles.
